Aditya Prakash Ensemble: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

173 Weergaven 17K

Every January, I attend globalFEST at a New York City nightclub and see some of the most fantastic music I'll experience all year. Now, given the pandemic's challenges and the hardening of international borders, NPR Music and globalFEST moved the 2021 edition from the nightclub to your screen of choice and shared the festival with the world. We called it Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST. We presented 16 artists in intimate settings (often behind desks donning globes), all hosted by African superstar Angélique Kidjo.
Performing from their home base in Los Angeles, Aditya Prakash Ensemble highlights songs borne from South India's Carnatic tradition. Prakash uses his voice as an instrument to tell powerful, emotive stories - which he reimagines in a fresh, dynamic way. Aditya Prakash Ensemble's modern take on traditional music mixes in jazz and hip-hop and features a diverse L.A. ensemble.

I love nothing more than breaking away from the carbon copy pop songs of radio and finding something that delivers a new and innovative experience. This delivers in every way possible. Thank you for your craft.

This has to be one of the most incredible Tiny Desks I've seen. Never Thought I'd hear a "Bhajan" on NPR but I'm all for it. This is a beautiful example of how Indian Classical music can gel so well with Jazz (& other western genres) and vice-versa because their foundations are so strong.

The two sections, maybe eight bars after 12:41 are a perfect example of how this style of singing and the eastern range in general is absolutely phenomenal. What an incredibly tamed voice.

The control that classical Indian (and others, though I’ve only really listened to Indian classical because it’s what my parents introduced me to) singers have over their voice is honestly astounding to me. Always kicked myself for not learning myself when I was younger. Though I suppose it’s never too late to start!
