The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Tom Huizenga | January 22, 2021
There's a distinct dissonance between the bucolic setting of this lovely Max Richter Tiny Desk (home) concert and the reality he references after his performance.
"Looking forward to the time when gigs can come back and we can do this for real," the composer says, leaving us with a yearning that is borne out in his tranquil, probing music.
These half-dozen short pieces can offer two very different modes of experience. Shot in artful black and white, their simplicity and beauty invite us into a world as we once knew it, where fresh air wafts through open doors and dogs peacefully snooze (canine cameos by Evie and Haku) in the late summer sunshine in southern England.
On the other hand, the chaos found in the real world we know today can find a balm in Richter's soothing, oscillating figures in "Infra 3" or the gently swaying chords of "Origins," where the music lumbers in the lower half of the keyboard.
There's a mysterious potency in instrumental music, where the mind is open to wander and free-associate. Max Richter taps into that power with singular grace and humanity.

Richter's music reaches right down to the soul.
He teaches that difficult harmony is not a requirement for moving music. His music has a wonderful harmony and the sensibility to grasp it.
that dog makes this that much better Edit: OMG another puppy i can'ttt
Knew this was gonna be bomb
Piano music is underappreciated
Dog walkings sound was a great arrangement
🔥🔥🔥🔥👍✨👌💛
Incredible composer! Love his work
When he fumbled with the music I just... man they never show that but that’s real. The music is stunning. I love it.
his music and the people he work with are truly amazing I love Infra but to be honest all his music is amazing
Horizon variations 😍 been waiting forever to hear him play it live! Beautiful
Thank you ❤
Philip Glass' Vibes
I know how pretentious this sounds, but in the film 'Hostiles', the soundtrack might as we be another actor in every scene, and it narrates the whole film.
Awww, puppy.
Thank you NPR and Max Richter for offering such a wonderful gift of music :)
Beautiful - as your music truly is. And wonderful to watch you play and take notes for when I’m playing from your ‘Piano Works’ collection (PLEASE can we have more of your works transcribed for us home pianists?!!) Thank you also, for sharing your beautiful home - and sweet dogs! 😍
Thank you Max!
Balmy 🥥🥥🥥
that's my dawg.(ie)
Meh...
Sublime!
I don't understand how they got all the different camera angles if it was live
26 soulless people hitting that "thumbs down" -----

Oh, ah - I remember - the most boring under those making super boring piano music. Once again - success is not the best indicator ..... so negative, shame on me. Despite that - I am really into minimal music.
Сказка про голого короля) Смысла в музыке ноль, зато фантик красивый. Главное не повестись на эти фантики!
That's a lucky dog!
Thank You :)
that dog is depressed from hearing all of this music
minimal elevator
It's good but it's Philip Glass.
At 1;57 is something I could not dream in my wildest fantasies that could ever be presented as a ''piece'' /''composition''/''whatever''.A suite of arpeggios in 7/4.H, A/Cdiez, etc.....wow.Music is going back in time.Think that Beethoven somehow used this .With a theme and etc.Somehow.And many others.Mentioned this as it has some vague echo.Ok.Wunderbar!
Thank you for your concert, love to see you just playing the piano.
Thank you.
Bravo! Thanks, npr!
Pure poetry
GÊNIO!!! Eu amo toda a tua obra, Max! Você é uma tremenda inspiração para mim!
Wow Magic
The Leftovers
I'm so happy this came out, I haven't listened to Max Richter in a while. Hope he's doing well
So beautiful..............and what a lovely spot to sit and play. Thanks for sharing some beauty on the internet. You are truly gifted.
Disappointed he played nothing from the Leftovers, still a very performance though.
Soothing!👍✌️😊🙏🏼🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵
Sounds like Philip Glass sometimes
Thanks Max really nice...
What about Organum tho
I'm not usually one to gush about pets appearing - but the dog!!!!
lots of influences from Phillip Glass. too much arpeggio replays. good for funerals.
@Belleza Vudd that is true.
One persons funeral music can be for another person the sounds of a spiritual awakening.
Max takes us on such a journey every time he plays. I was so lucky to have the opportunity to attend one of his SLEEP concerts in NYC live and it was transformative. I am so grateful for his music and creativity.
Lucky you! The Sleep performance in Los Angeles sold out so fast, I never had a chance to get tickets.
Listen to Maestro Richter's _The Departure_ (from _The Leftovers_ soundtrack). It's as if each chord change represents one of the Kübler-Ross stages of grief. R.I.P. Noel
The Leftovers is one of the best soundtracks ever
I love max RICHTER ..i love the leftovers i love your music...thankss💚💚💛💛🧡❤❤💙💖💖💝💖💝💔
Max should do the next Sims soundtrack.
That moment with the score leading into Prelude 6, perfect and relatable.
What a calming Tiny Desk this is! Very well filmed too! Many thanks.
Yes, nicely filmed, love the high contrast black & white look. I wonder if Tiny Desk staff did any of the sound/video setup? They usually do a knockout job at their usual Tiny Desk digs.
Max and NPR, thanks guys. Max, your work is amazing. And for me imposible to describe my admiration for you. I just can say thank you.
Give me 3 beers and I can mash on a piano just like that.
Lovely ❤️
Dog needs some nail clippers for them paws before he waltz’sssss in next time 🐾
Absolutely absolutely absolutely amazingly beautiful and comforting ~👏🏼🙏✨✨✨
I love watching tiny desk Concerts, I’d love it moooore if you’ll dare to explore Ethiopian Bands there are beautiful bands that deliver very much Ethiopian-Eritrean color to this wonderful tiny world of music y’all got going on! I’m telling you...get to exploring and you’ll be amazed how much of a gem Ethiopian 🇪🇹and Eritrean🇪🇷 music is!
Dog + piano = 💖
Camera to his back and at his hands from the left gives me the sense of the space we are in, through refection, whereas the camera to his right picks up the outside space while muting him to a back lit silhouette. The playful back-and-forth between the inside space and outside, with the reflection focused around his hands makes me feel like this music lives as a semi-permeable membrane between two beautiful worlds.
Your music puts me to sleep most nights, so relaxing and I’m grateful for it! Thank you for sharing your gift with us✨
simply gorgeous ❤️
Beautiful.
Favorite composer of nowadays. I'm really looking forward to when the pandemic is over and I can hear it live. With great respect
What a sweet surprise to wake up to. So much of my inspiration comes from Max. Thank you.
The shot of the pup relaxing in the foreground and Richter playing piano would be the perfect loop for a lofi classical radio - beats to relax/study to stream 😊.
Opens with the only song of his that I've learned to play. Sad Vlad indeed.
My fav composer since Leftovers
The 🐕
lucky dog
I know this guy. His music is always playing in the waiting room of the place my therapy sessions happen.
I feel so calm after listening and watching this, thank you🌼
That dog must be stoked to have such cool vibes 24/7
Now that we can breathe, we can create a silence to appreciate subtle beauty. Thank you Tiny Desk and Mr. Richter.
When I’m playing my beautiful music, off in the distance I hear my wonderful wife say “Please close the door. You’re letting all the flies in!” Otherwise, thank you TD(H)C!
absolute love for this mans music, such beauty
Unsure what I would have done if he had played On The Nature Of Daylight 🤌🏼
That piece wasn't written for piano and it's highly overused in films, TV etc...
@Dylan Di Luccio yea I’ve watched that one! Just a sentiment based on this particular setting.
i would finish
His old tiny desk has it on it
Too bad he didn't played November but everything is awesome anyway
Pure aural gold
The dog definitely stole the show... lol... Beautiful Music Max!
Which one?
You got me right off the bat! I love the classical pianist that you are my friend. In these times solitude is soothing music. Well done! THANK YOU FOR SHARING ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤I play piano...not nearly as well as you.GOD BLESS❤
Lol max I’m in love with you
max forever
Mucho bello!
Us musicians know the pain of sheet music folding backwards 😅
Thank you tiny desk, so good.
During the pandemic, I developed a panic disorder. Before the meds and therapy did their job, some days Richter's music was about the only thing keeping me going.
Yes, this exactly.
I feel you. U got this my friend. Keep striving
❣❣❣❣❣
Horizon Variations walked me gently onto a movie set where they were shooting a montage of all my favorite poignant memories & sat me in the director's chair. Six out of five stars.
Hands down my biggest inspiration as a composer; everything Max writes is just so rich with texture and emotion. Also one of the only artists I can listen to regardless of my mood or what I'm doing, and I think that is the mark of truly great music.
I couldn't have put it better than what you've just said! Since I found Max's music from a friend's recommendation back in 2013, he is also firmly my favourite composer and main source of inspiration for my own music...
Lost my dad just over 12 days ago, this music grounds me as tears roll down my cheeks. Thank you.
Sorry for your loss. May your tomorrow’s be filled with happiness.
My condolences.
🙏🏾💙
Very sorry for your loss
Gonna listen to this ten times while working today give or take. The Blue notebook is one of my all time favorite albums the intro gave me chills. Thanks NPR.
I do the same .I must get through at least 50 hours in a week. Tiny desk and kexp are a world of music to discover
Yes, now often working from home, I'm gonna add this performance to to my usual mix of Keith Jarrett Standards trio, Tom Jobim, etc, on NLlike.
ahhh!
What a wonderful way to start the day. 💫
We are in quarantine and woke up to find this gift. Feeling a little blue, this helps to ground me. Gorgeous. Thank you.
Love the puppy wandering, wagging obviously happy with his human.
